Delirium tremens (also called DTs) is the name for medical problems that can happen when a person who has a physical dependence on alcohol suddenly stops using alcohol. DTs happen only if a person has had long-term, heavy use of alcohol.

Symptoms of DTs include:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Sweating.
  • Confusion or hallucinations (delirium).

Delirium tremens can be life-threatening. Doctors treat delirium tremens in the hospital with prescription medicines.
